THE GOVERNMENT OF ST. KITTS & NEVIS

The government of St. Kitts & Nevis is governed by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party administration. The government was recently installed on August 6th, 2022, led by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrrance M Drew. The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis operates as a federal parliamentary democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. This structure ensures a balanced distribution of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

Executive Branch

At the helm of the executive branch is the Hon. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, Prime Minister, who is the head of government and is typically the leader of the majority party the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party in the National Assembly. The Prime Minister appoints a Cabinet of Ministers, each responsible for specific portfolios, to assist in the administration of government affairs. The Governor-General, appointed by the British monarch, serves as the ceremonial head of state and represents the monarch in the Federation.

Legislative Branch

The National Assembly is the legislative body of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is a unicameral legislature consisting of elected members who represent the interests of the citizens. The Assembly is responsible for enacting laws, approving budgets, and overseeing the actions of the executive branch.

Judicial Branch

The judiciary in St. Kitts and Nevis is independent and upholds the principles of justice and fairness. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court serves as the highest court, with justices residing in St. Kitts to adjudicate matters in the Federation. This ensures that the rights of individuals are protected and that justice is administered impartially.
