Mission Statement of the Department Gender Affairs: The Department of Gender Affairs is committed to ensuring that all persons, regardless of gender, are equal partners in shaping the Economic, Educational Political, Cultural and Social Development of the Federation.
Responsibilities of the Department
The Department was first established in 1986 as the Department of Women’s Affairs in the Ministry of Health and Women’s Affairs. Although the Department of Gender Affairs has been a small Department since its inception, it has an extremely large mandate of ensuring that women and men and boys and girls share equally in every aspect of national development.
The Department has a significant role in informing State policy to ensure gender equity and the realization of gender equality. The work of the department’s is two pronged:
- it seeks to develop as well as impact policy development;
- it also develops programmes which helps to address identified gender issues
In 2000, the Department assumed its current name, The Department of Gender Affairs, in keeping with the State’s commitment to ensure that gender is mainstreamed in all of its policies and programmes. The Department currently has a staff consisting of 7 employees including a Director, an Executive Officer four field officers and a Clerk.
The Critical areas of concern for the Department are:
- The Development of a National Gender Policy
- Women’s Political Participation
- Engaging with Men
- Public Awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
- Empowerment of Women
- The Girl Child
