HIGH COURT SERVICES TEMPORARILY RELOCATED TO THE “CHARLES AMORY” BUILDING AT FORTLANDS, BASSETERRE

A brief ceremony took place this morning, Wednesday, September 20, to commemorate a significant event. The gathering was attended by the esteemed Garth Wilkin, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, as well as representatives from the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association and other members of the legal community in the region.

During the ceremony, Attorney General Wilkin addressed the attendees and explained the need for a new facility for the courtrooms. This necessity arose after the closure of the Sir Lee L. Moore Judicial & Legal Services Complex in early June 2022 due to the presence of mold. AG Wilkin emphasized the ministry’s responsibility to provide adequate support to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, which includes ensuring the provision of suitable judicial infrastructure. He acknowledged that this issue has been a major concern for the ministry since he assumed office thirteen months ago.

AG Wilkin expressed gratitude to Mr. Ernest Amory, who owns both properties, for providing assistance in the form of temporary facilities for the Magistrate’s Court. He acknowledged the satisfactory conditions of the temporary courtrooms and praised Mr. Amory’s willingness to step in and find a solution to their ongoing problem. The Attorney General also recognized that the Charles Amory Building, where the high court services have been relocated, is another temporary resolution to their long-term issue.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, represented by its President, Ms. Kurlyn Merchant, welcomed the relocation of the high court services to the Charles Amory Building. Ms. Merchant commended the Attorney General for the government’s efforts in enhancing the physical court infrastructure and ensuring that attorneys and litigants can navigate the new space comfortably.

Overall, the ceremony served as a significant milestone in addressing the challenges faced by the legal community and highlighted the commitment of the government and key stakeholders to provide a suitable environment for the administration of justice in St. Kitts and Nevis.
