“Saint Kitts and Nevis Marks 40 Years of Independence in New York with a Spectacular Cultural Celebration and a Vision for a Sustainable Future”

The Permanent Mission of Saint Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with esteemed dignitaries, hosted a grand gala and cultural extravaganza on Friday, September 22nd, to commemorate the country’s 40th Independence Anniversary. This enchanting celebration, graced by the Honourable Prime Minister, brought together nearly 600 nationals, dignitaries, and friends of Saint Kitts and Nevis in a vibrant display of culture, entertainment, and honor. Distinguished attendees included Her Excellency Jacinth Henry Martin, Ambassador to the United States; His Excellency Walford Gumbs, Governor-General’s Deputy; the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and others from the Prime Minister’s delegation.

The evening’s festivities showcased the rich heritage of Saint Kitts and Nevis, featuring captivating cultural acts, mesmerizing masquerades, enchanting moko jumbies, rhythmic dance performances, and soulful songs that resonated with the nation’s spirit. A cultural village added to the highlights, where guests indulged in the signature drink of the islands, freshly harvested coconut water, and enjoyed delectable treats adorned with the vibrant design of the national flag. Additionally, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office presented a special cultural performance, commemorating 40 years of diplomatic relations between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, which added an international flair to the festivities.

The gala took an extraordinary turn with the introduction of the Prime Minister’s Diaspora Awards, honoring individuals who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields. The distinguished honorees included Professor Caryl Phillip, who received the Prime Minister’s Legacy Award for Leadership and Excellence in the Literary Arts; Dr. Andrea Browne, recognized as a Woman of Excellence in Science; and Ms. Phoenetia Browne, recipient of the Prime Minister’s Youth Excellence Award in Sports.

During his address to fellow nationals in New York, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew articulated his administration’s visionary commitment to transforming the twin-island Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis into a Sustainable Island State. He emphasized the importance of sustainable and renewable energy sources, accessible water, quality healthcare, housing, and education as critical principles for the nation’s advancement. Prime Minister Drew invited the audience to join the country’s pursuit of a sustainable island state where all citizens have equal opportunities to thrive.

Prime Minister Drew also elaborated on the “Reset Independence 40” initiative, launched to support the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis in rebuilding their lives in the post-COVID world. The initiative aimed to alleviate burdens such as accumulated debt from electricity bills, water bills, student loans, and housing bills, ensuring a path forward in their pursuit of economic stability and growth.

Expressing gratitude towards the hardworking individuals who contributed to the success of Saint Kitts and Nevis as an independent nation, Prime Minister Drew acknowledged the difficulties faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a token of appreciation, the workers of Saint Kitts and Nevis were rewarded with a bonus, acknowledging their sacrifices and dedication.

The night’s entertainment was truly extraordinary, featuring stellar performances by Rucas and David House of the Grand Masters Band, Abena Amory, and the captivating sounds of the Breakaway Brass Band. Guests danced the night away, creating unforgettable memories filled with joy and celebration. Distinguished guests in attendance included H.E. Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly, accompanied by his wife, along with Ms. Vanessa L. Gibson, Bronx Borough President, and Attorney Hugh Campbell, adding to the grandeur of the evening.
