MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE TO PARTNER WITH IICA TO SUPPORTDEVELOPMENT OF BROILER POULTRY INDUSTRY

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Marine Resources and Cooperatives is partnering with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) this week to host a BroilerTraining Consultation in an effort to develop the broiler poultry industry in St. Kitts and Nevis. The training session which is slated to be held in the Conference Room at the Department of Agriculture on Wednesday, 15th November 2023, will be facilitated by IICA Consultant, Mr.
Dayanand Mahabir- Singh of Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Singh is expected to engage in meaningful discussions and conduct training in broiler production for extension officers and farmers with an emphasis on best practices including pen design and layout preparation, sanitation; Principles of biosecurity; Understanding the principles of proper brooding technique; Disease management and prevention; Evaluating chick quality upon arrival to farm and First week management strategies.

Mr. Singh is a livestock management consultant, with expertise in field operations, management and pathology in poultry broiler, layers and hatchery production in Trinidad and Tobago. He has more than 30 years in the field and management within the livestock industry. He has overseen the day-to-day management of poultry breeder farms, hatchery, and broiler farms with responsibilities to include the improvement of bird performance, and efficiency and productivity of operations. He has a wealth of hands-on knowledge of the poultry industry. His five-day visit to St. Kitts and Nevis will comprise field visits and hands-on training sessions between both islands.

Wednesday’s training session is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. in St. Kitts, while sessions in Nevis will engage farmers, Extension Agents and Vet Officers on Thursday, 16th November at 9:00 a.m. Interested persons are asked to email agriculture@gov.kn or contact the Department of Agriculture at 467-1841 for further information.
