Boxing Day

In St. Kitts, Christmas night leads into Boxing Day which is celebrated as J’ouvert morning. J’ouvert is the unofficial start of the Carnival street parades, where people jam through the streets of Basseterre, early in the morning.
After Christmas dinner and socializing, it’s time to get ready for J’ouvert. Some are getting ready from around midnight on December 26th while others take a little nap and get started at around 3 am.
J’ouvert troupes start out with a party that leads into the J’ouvert jam. Hi- Fi’s and Bands begin moving at about 5 am with some bands touching the road at around 6 am. Then the party continues around Basseterre until 10 am or if revelers are lucky, until midday.
St. Kitts was once known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies for its domination of 18th- century colonial battles. How the island rose to become the world’s leader in sugarcane cultivation, an inspiration for the industrial revolution in the process.
