About RIDU

The Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDU) operates under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s Office and plays a strategic role in advancing the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA) through regional cooperation, diaspora engagement, and inclusive national development.

The Unit is responsible for coordinating matters related to CARICOM, OECS, ACS, Diaspora Affairs, and the Returning Nationals Secretariat, and is staffed by officers with specialised responsibility for regional integration, international engagement, and diaspora relations. RIDU is headed by an ambassador, who reports directly to the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office.

In alignment with SISA’s pillars of economic resilience, social inclusion, institutional strengthening, and global partnership, RIDU collaborates closely with Ministries, Departments, and regional institutions to support policy coordination and the successful hosting of regional and international meetings within the Federation. The Unit serves as the Government’s primary interface with regional bodies, ensuring that the Prime Minister is provided with timely, accurate, and strategic information to inform national and regional decision-making.

Through its diaspora mandate, RIDU strengthens the connection between Saint Kitts and Nevis and its global diaspora, recognising diaspora engagement as a critical driver of investment, skills transfer, cultural continuity, and sustainable development. The Diaspora Ambassador maintains active engagement with diaspora associations and networks, providing support for their programmes, initiatives, and national development-oriented activities throughout the year.

The Returning Nationals Secretariat, housed within RIDU, supports nationals who have chosen to return home after residing abroad for ten (10) or more consecutive years, facilitating their reintegration and contribution to national life. This function directly supports SISA’s objective of harnessing human capital and promoting inclusive participation in the Federation’s social and economic development. St. Kitts was once known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies for its domination of 18th- century colonial battles. How the island rose to become the world’s leader in sugarcane cultivation, an inspiration for the industrial revolution in the process.
